Grim news for Trump’s approval rating as Americans fear for their finances, poll finds
Disapproval of President Donald Trump’s job performance is growing, a week after he announced reciprocal tariffs on several countries, according to a poll released Tuesday.
A majority of registered voters– 53% — disapprove of Trump’s job as president, according to the survey by pollster Global Strategy Group on behalf of Navigator Research, a Democratic messaging and polling firm.
Just 44% of registered voters approve of Trump’s job performance while another 3% are unsure how to assess the president’s performance.
The results show Trump’s approval rating is underwater by 9 percentage points — a 7 percentage point drop from March and 11 points from early February, when a majority of Americans had a favorable view of his job performance.
When asked solely about Trump’s job on the economy, the numbers are slightly worse for the president, with 55% disapproving of his handling of economic matters compared to 42% who approve and 3% who weren’t sure.
Those numbers on the economy are Trump’s worst since Navigator began tracking his approval in 2018, the survey found.
Trump is doing worse in early April than at any time since February with every segment of voters characterized by the poll, including MAGA voters.
The survey defined these voters as “Republicans who identify as ‘a supporter of the MAGA movement’ on a separate question, while ‘non-MAGA Republicans’ are Republicans who do not consider themselves supporters of the MAGA movement or are not sure.”
MAGA Republicans support Trump’s job overall at a 94% to 6% clip — an 8% decrease from March — and approve of his handling of the economy by 91% to 9% — a 4% decrease from March.
The waning support comes as Americans are increasingly anxious about their personal finances.
More than 6 in 10 voters say are uneasy about their personal financial situations — a 13 percentage point increase from a month ago — compared to 36% who say they are confident.
Trump’s ratings come as voters’ views on tariffs are increasingly negative.
Just 30% of those polled view tariffs favorably while 58% have an unfavorable view.
Specifically on the Trump tariffs announced last week, only 37% support the measures compared to 55% who oppose them.
The survey of 1,000 voters was conducted between April 3 and April 7. It has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3.1 percentage points.
