Area roundup: UMS-Wright holds off hot-shooting St. Michael

UMS-Wright advanced to the Class 4A Area 1 tournament championship game with a 53-48 win over St. Michael on Tuesday. The Bulldogs survived a hot-shooting St. Michael team that hit eight 3-pointers on the night – including four in the fourth period.

UMS-Wright led 29-22 at the half and 38-31 headed into the final quarter.

Joe Lott and Sims Druhan scored 11 points apiece to lead the winners. Bridges Simmons scored 8 and Arthur Chitty and Finlay Lavelle added 7 points each.

Joshua Kurz led St. Michael with 19 points

UMS-Wright will host Orange Beach on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Area 1 championship game.

CLASS 6A

Blount 58, Saraland 44: Antonio Jackson registered a double-double as top seeded and ninth-ranked Blount ousted Saraland on Tuesday at Blount. Jackson scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Leopards (19-6).

Devontaey Woulard scored 15 points for the Leopards, who also got 13 points from Joseph Paige.

Desmond Williams led Saraland with 13. Braxton Ware added 12.

Blount will face Theodore in the Area 1 championship game at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Spanish Fort 62, Robertsdale 61: Price Middleton knocked down two free throws with 7 seconds left as Spanish Fort edged Robertsdale in the Area 2 tournament at McGill-Toolen on Tuesday.

Tyler Wigley scored 23 points to lead the winners.

“Survive and advance,” Spanish Fort coach Jimbo Fisher said. “Our kids showed tremendous grit and character throughout the entire game – even late when Robertsdale took the lead. They never hung their heads when we were faced with adversity. Really proud of our team for getting the job done.”

The two teams, which split during the regular season, were neck and neck through most of the game. The Toros led 13-11 after the first quarter and held a 28-24 halftime lead, but the Golden Bears outscored Spanish Fort 17-11 in the third quarter behind the play of Katton Hobbs, who finished with 21 points.

In the fourth quarter, the Toros overcame three 3-pointers from Gabe Stevens, who finished with 13 points, thanks to 8 points from Wigley and 7 of Josh Powell’s 9 points in the decisive quarter.

Glen Williams added 12 points for Robertsdale.

The Toros (18-9) advance to play host McGill-Toolen on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the championship game.

“If we don’t value the basketball and protect it better, then Thursday’s championship game will be over quickly,” Tolbert said.

McGill-Toolen 77, Baldwin County 44: Devin McCaine scored a game-high 21 points Tuesday as No. 3-ranked McGill-Toolen jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back en route to a rout of Baldwin County in the opening round of the Area 2 tournament.

The Yellow Jackets (25-6) have now won 15 straight games.

McGill-Toolen jumped to a 20-7 first-quarter lead. Alex Shamburger scored 6 of his 11 points in the second quarter to extend the lead to 45-19. McGill started the third quarter on a 13-0 run and took a comfortable 64-32 lead into the fourth quarter.

“It’s always good to get that first-round game out of the way,” McGill-Toolen coach Phillip Murphy said. “Proud of our guys’ effort and execution. We just have to continue to focus on getting better.”

Jack Murphy scored 12 for the Jackets, who got 5 rebounds from both Shamburger and Ray Andrews.

Bennett Russ, who had 9 points, and Shamburger each had 4 steals on the night.

McGill-Toolen, which shot 30 of 55 from the field, will host the Spanish Fort on Thursday night in the area championship game. Both McGill and Spanish Fort will advance to next week’s sub-regional round.

The Lions improved to 15-12 overall with their 12th win in 13 games.

Silas Evans added 12 points and 7 rebounds while Mikel Bonner and Jarius Cross had 10 points each.

Williamson will face B.C. Rain for the championship and the right to host the first round of sub-region play on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Prattville Christian 39, B.T. Washington Magnet 36: The Panthers slipped past Booker T. Washington Magnet on Tuesday in the Area 5 tournament at Wilcox Central.

Conner Williams scored 17 points to lead the winners. Cade Segars grabbed 8 rebounds and had 5 assists to go with his 7 points. Carson Roberson scored 8 for PCA. PJ Evans claimed 6 rebounds and had 5 assists.

Prattville Christian will play Wilcox Central for the tournament title on Friday at 6 p.m.

Decatur Heritage 94, Falkville 84: The Eagles used a big first half to open up a 51-37 lead and held off Falkville in the Area 13 tournament at Holly Pond on Tuesday. Second seeded and sixth-ranked Decatur Heritage got 31 points from Bo Mitchell, who hit six 3-pointers on the night.

Nash Thomas scored 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds for the winners. Brady Wilson scored 12 points and had 5 rebounds. Hayden Page scored 11 points and Jordan Davis added 9. Bo Solley dealt out 10 assists and had 5 rebounds to go with his 4 points.

Isaiah Warnick tossed in 24 points to lead Falkville. Dawson Fowler scored 19 points and Caden Burnett added 16.
