Does shooting in a dome create extra challenges? Here’s what one Auburn sharpshooter said
As Auburn men’s basketball prepares for its Final Four game against Florida, one adjustment will be the size of the venue.
The 2025 Final Four will be played at the Alamodome in San Antonio, a 64,000-seat stadium used primarily for football games. It’s about seven times bigger than Neville Arena, causing a depth perception adjustment when shooting the ball.
It’s nothing new for the event — the Final Four has long been played in football stadiums — but it’s not something Auburn has had to experience this season. Despite that, Auburn’s players and coaches aren’t spending too much time worrying about the change.
“I think if you talk about it too much, it gets in their heads. So, we haven’t said one word about it,” Auburn associate head coach Steven Pearl told reporters Friday. “The basketball is the same size, the rim’s the same size. Just shoot the damn thing and let it go in.”
Miles Kelly, who leads Auburn in 3-pointers made this season, didn’t sound too worried about the idea of playing in a dome either.
Prior to his time at Auburn, he spent three seasons at Georgia Tech in the ACC, which meant regular trips to the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse. His last game in that stadium was a 30-point outing on Feb. 28, 2023, knocking down seven 3s on 14 attempts.
“Not really,” Kelly said when asked if the bigger venue has an effect on him. “I feel like I’m used to playing in big arenas. At Georgia Tech we played at Syracuse, so they played in their football stadium. When we played at Syracuse, I had some of my best games, so I’m used to all the depth perception and playing in big arenas like that.”
Kelly has been relatively cold for Auburn throughout the NCAA tournament. He started the run with a bang, scoring 23 on seven 3-pointers in the first round, but is 3-for-18 from long range since.
He led all Auburn scorers in the Tigers’ regular season loss to Florida, and it could take a big effort from him and the rest of Auburn’s guards to beat the Gators on Saturday.
“Just stay aggressive,” Kelly said on his approach against Florida. “Make them feel my presence there and really make their guards uncomfortable defensively.”
Saturday’s Final Four game between Auburn and Florida is set to tip off at 5:09 p.m. and will be televised on CBS.
