One shining moment: Auburn’s JP Pegues recounts March Madness memory

The NCAA tournament has provided timeless sports memories for generations.

When it comes to March Madness moments, Christian Laettner’s shot in 1992 and Kris Jenkins game-winner in 2016 top the all-time list.

However, Auburn basketball’s JP Pegues makes a strong case on why his last-second shot two years at Furman deserves a seat at the table.

In one of the biggest upsets in NCAA tournament history, the No. 13 seed Furman defeated the No. 4 seed Virgina Cavaliers in the first round of the 2023 tournament.

Virgina led 67-65 in the game’s final seconds before Kihei Clark committed a costly turnover, leading to Pegues draining a three-pointer to take a 68–67 lead with 2.4 seconds remaining.

“I still surprise myself when I rewatch it,” Pegues said to Al.com. “Every year you see it replayed on social media and Tv. I’ll remember that moment for the rest of my life.”

Pegues transferred to Auburn over the offseason adding to the Tigers backcourt depth. While bonding with his Auburn teammates, his shot at Furman served as the perfect ice breaker.

“Even me being around this squad they knew me from that moment,” Pegues said. “They would always throw jokes when it comes up on social media during the month of March.”

So, where does Pegues rank it among the other notable moments from the NCAA Tournament?

“I’m so hard on myself, so sometimes I don’t give myself the credit I deserve. It was historical and it did not hit me until it made One Shining Moment,” Pegues said.

“I feel like it’s so hard to put it up there with some of the other shots we have seen. But my shot was something that was big in March Madness.”

Pegues and the Auburn Tigers will play Florida in the first semifinal game of the Final Four, with tipoff scheduled for 5:09 p.m. on CBS.
