Samford’s Bucky McMillan set to be hired as Texas A&M basketball coach, reports say

Samford’s Bucky McMillan is set to become the new head men’s basketball coach at Texas A&M, according to multiple reports.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Jeff Borzello are reporting that McMillan and the Aggies have agreed on a 5-year contract. CBS’ Jon Rothstein, Rivals’ Landy Rosow and TexasAgs.com’s Billy Liucci are all reporting that Texas A&M is zeroing in on the 41-year-old Birmingham native to be the school’s next coach.

McMillan leaves the Bulldogs after five seasons in which he posted a 99-52 record, including an NCAA tournament berth in 2024. Samford finished 22-11 and reached the NIT this year, its fourth straight 20-win season.

McMillan will replace Buzz Peterson, who left earlier this week to take the Maryland job. The Aggies went 23-11 this season, reaching the NCAA tournament for the third straight year.

A Birmingham native, McMillan was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year each of the last three seasons. He’s known for his up-tempo “Bucky Ball” style, which features a barrage of 3-point shooting on offense and constant pressure on defense.

Prior to his time at Samford, McMillan was one of the most-successful high school basketball coaches in the history of the state of Alabama. He won 333 games and five state championships — also finishing as state runner-up twice — in 12 seasons at Mountain Brook before moving up to the college game.
