Kalen DeBoer talks quarterbacks, injuries, more after Alabama scrimmage
Alabama football held its second spring scrimmage on Friday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. It was the Crimson Tide’s first at that venue, after conducting its first at its regular practice facility last week.
UA head coach Kalen DeBoer has plenty to consider throughout the spring, most importantly a quarterback battle. Ty Simpson, Austin Mack and Keelon Russell are all competing for that job, a situation that is unlikely to be settled until the fall.
The Crimson Tide will continue spring practice through April 12, when it will hold A-Day at Bryant-Denny Stadium. A-Day will be a regular practice this year, not a game or scrimmage, and will not be televised.
DeBoer spoke to reporters after the scrimmage. Here are the highlights.
— DeBoer said Alabama got around 115 plays in during scrimmage. 50 each for first and second teams, with the rest for the third team.
— DeBoer says Josh Cuevas and Marshall Pritchett will miss the rest of spring with injuries.
— DeBoer says being thin with injuries for spring means Tide can build depth at certain positions.
— All three quarterbacks got their chances with the ones and twos according to DeBoer. Says Simpson and Mack get more reps with the first team due to their age.
— DeBoer says Isaiah Horton’s run blocking struggles last season at Miami might have been a mindset issue,
— Says Richard Young needs big offseason this summer. DeBoer says Young battled through injuries last year. Says he wants all RBs to make more explosive plays this season.
— Ryan Williams did not scrimmage DeBoer says, noting Williams could miss rest of spring due to minor injuries. Says Williams would be out there if it was up to him, but Alabama is using caution.
— DeBoer says Ty Simpson being on leadership group was voted on in January. Says he would have voted for Simpson himself, but the spot is not an indicator that the QB has an inside track to the starting job.
— Says Alabama has been receiving positive news about Keon Sabb. Praises the fight Sabb showed during last season, especially the Tennessee game.
— Praises Alabama’s young linebackers. Crimson Tide is missing Deontae Lawson and Justin Jefferson out for spring.
— DeBoer closes the press conference.
