Why Ryan Williams missed Alabama’s 2nd spring scrimmage: ‘Being really careful’

Alabama football could be without its superstar receiver for the rest of spring. Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer said Friday after UA’s second spring scrimmage that Ryan Williams did not take the field at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

DeBoer made it sound as if the team is simply exercising caution with Williams due to minor injuries.

“We didn’t have Ryan scrimmage today,” DeBoer said. “Just taking care of him. We know what we have there. He might not do much the rest of the spring. There’s a couple of nicks and things like that, but if you asked him, he’d be out there and scrimmaging. He’s dressed up and ready to go, but just being really careful with some things he’s going through the last week or so.”

Williams is entering his sophomore season with Alabama, and figures to play a major role in the offense for 2025. He made 48 catches for 865 yards and eight touchdowns last season, famously playing as a 17-year-old after the Tide recruited him as a five-star prospect out of Saraland.

DeBoer was asked whether Williams could move around the wide receiver positions, playing both inside and outside in the coming year.

“He’s a versatile guy,” DeBoer said. “He can play any position, inside, outside, field, boundary, doesn’t matter. And you gotta make sure that we continue to give those opportunities down the field, the things we saw a year ago, explosive play opportunities, but also a lot of it is just getting the ball in his hands.”

Williams isn’t the only player DeBoer announced an injury status for after the Tide’s scrimmage, with Danny Lewis Jr. already out for spring, UA got even thinner at tight end, with Josh Cuevas and Marshall Pritchett both out for the rest of it.

Alabama will continue spring practice through April 12, when it will hold an open session for A-Day. A-Day will not be a scrimmage or a game this year, and will not be shown on television, though admission at Bryant-Denny Stadium will be free once again.
