15-year-old boy is second teen accused of shooting at Alabama police this week
A 15-year-old boy is under arrest after authorities say he shot at Dothan police, marking the second time this week a young teen has fired on an Alabama officer.
Just before 11 p.m. Wednesday, Dothan police responded to reports of someone with a gun at the intersection of North Range Street and Alabama Avenue.
Lt. Scott Owens said when officers arrived, they found a person matching the description and he began to run from the scene.
As officers began to pursue him, two others joined him.
One of them pointed a gun at the officer and fired a single round, Owens said.
The officer was not injured.
All three suspects were able to escape that night despite K-9 officers attempting to track them, Owens said.
During an unrelated investigation, detectives identified the person who shot at the officer as a 15-year-old boy.
The teen is charged with first-degree attempted assault of a peace officer. He was placed in the Southeast Alabama Diversion Center as the request of a juvenile probation officer.
“Actions like these will not be tolerated in our community,” said Chief William Benny. “Whether someone is committing gun violence in the community or on a sworn law enforcement officer, the Dothan Police Department will find those who violate the law, who put citizens and officers in danger, and will fully hold them accountable according to the law.”
A 15-year-old was arrested earlier this week in Tuscaloosa after authorities say the teen, wearing a mask, fired at least eight rounds in rapid succession at Tuscaloosa officers. He is charged through juvenile court with two counts of attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
