HBO series star reveals doctors told him he was dying, symptoms likely from being hit by cement truck

Adam Devine, known for roles in HBO’s “Righteous Gemstones” and the “Pitch Perfect” movie franchise, revealed recently doctors told him he was going to die then said the symptoms were a result of being hit by a cement truck as a child.

During a Wednesday appearance on the “In Depth With Graham Bensinger” podcast, the “Modern Family” star said he deals with pain as a result of spasms, which is impacting his mobility.

“They told me I was dying, literally, within this last year they told me that,” Devine said.

Devine, as he shared with “Entertainment Weekly” in 2016, was hit by a cement truck when he was 11 while trying to cross the street.

“They say the reason I lived was the bike took the hit first,” he said. “I still slid 500 feet. Picked me up under the first two wheels and then spit me out.”

According to the report, Devine had 25 surgeries after the accident and still feels the impact of his injuries.

Doctors, after ruling out hip issues after two surgeries, recently suggested it may be stiff-person syndrome (SPS), an autoimmune disorder that is a degenerative condition that causes stiffness.

Devine said he was told that the average life expectancy is six years.

“They told me that I had that literally a month before my son Beau was born,” he added.

As it turns out, Devine’s symptoms are more likely from his accident than any new condition, he explained.

“I think I just got so tight and so tightly wound, and my body has all these things that are a little wonky and a little wrong with it, that I just sort of snapped,” Devine said about working out a lot during the pandemic. “I think I’m still dealing with it, but it’s been three years now.”
