Social Security will issue 2 checks to some people next month: Here’s why

Social Security’s payment schedule is determined by the day you were born in your birth month.

Beneficiaries born on the 1st – 10th of the month are paid on the second Wednesday; 11-20th on the third Wednesday and 21st – 31st on the fourth Wednesday. There are exceptions, however, including people who received Social Security before May 1997 or those who get Supplementary Security Income, or SSI.

Those beneficiaries – as well as those who receive SSI and Social Security – are paid on the first of each month.

But it’s that “first of the month” stipulation that sometimes causes issues due to quirks of the calendar. If the first day of the month falls on a weekend or a holiday, the payments are issued the Friday before, a change that sometimes pushes two payments into one month and none in the following.

That’s the case in May and June and the reason SSI recipients – people with disabilities or low-income seniors – will receive two payments in a month. May’s SSI payment will be issued on time on May 1. June’s, however, will also come in May, on the 30st since June 1 is on a Sunday.

Beneficiaries will receive one payment in July and then two in August – on the 1st and the 29th – since Sept. 1 is the Labor Day holiday. No SSI payments will be issued in September itself. Two SSI payments will also be issued in October (1st and 31st) and December (1st and 31st).
