Former Auburn quarterback suspended from current team following arrest

Tulane quarterback TJ Finley, who once played at Auburn, has been suspended from the team following an arrest on charges related to a stolen car, according to multiple reports.

Finley, 23, was booked on a charge of illegally possessing a stolen item worth more than $25,000, according to Fox 8 of New Orleans. Finley was arrested by Tulane campus police and transported to the Orleans Parish Prison, but has since been released on bond.

Tulane athletics released the following statement, via WDSU:

“We are aware of a situation involving TJ Finley. He has been suspended from the football program pending the outcome of the case. Due to federal laws governing student privacy, we will not disclose any additional information regarding the student, including information related to disciplinary proceedings.”

A native of Ponchatoula, La., Finley signed with LSU out of high school and played in six games for the Tigers in 2020 before transferring to Auburn. In two seasons at Auburn, he played in a total of 13 games (with six starts) and passed for 1,258 yards and seven touchdowns with five interceptions.

Finley then transferred to Texas State, where he had his best season in 2023. In 13 games for the Bobcats, he threw for 3,439 yards and 24 touchdowns while leading the team to eight wins and a victory in the First Responders Bowl.

However, Texas State signed Arizona transfer Jayden de Laura after the season, so Finley entered the transfer portal again (de Laura never played a snap for the Bobcats after it was revealed he had settled a sexual assault lawsuit; Texas State eventually signed James Madison transfer Jordan McCloud). He landed at Western Kentucky, where he played in three games — including starting the season-opener vs. Alabama — before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.

With Caden Veltkamp entrenched as the Hilltoppers’ No. 1 quarterback by the end of the 2024 season, Finley was on the move again to his fifth school in six years. He signed in December with Tulane, where he was set to compete for the starting job with fellow transfers Cadin Semonza (Ball State) and Donovan Leary (Illinois).

Tulane went 9-4 in 2024 under first-year coach Jon Sumrall, losing to Army in the AAC championship game and to Florida in the Gasparilla Bowl. After the season, Green Wave starting quarterback Darian Mensah transferred to Duke.
