‘We knew we were the No. 1 team’: How Florida’s victory at Auburn made them title favorites

Florida gave Auburn basketball its first home and conference loss in its last matchup back in February.

With the Tigers being the second No. 1 team, the Gators defeated this season. The victory at Auburn gave Florida its confidence when wrapping up the regular season.

“We always believed we were the No. 1 team entering that game,” Florida’s Alijah Martin said to Al.com Thursday. “After that victory we knew we were the No. 1 team in the country. So, it was all about if the world new we were No. 1. And we are not really worried about what the world thinks. We’ll see Saturday.”

Martin missed the first matchup against Auburn with a hip injury. After scoring in double figures in each of Florida’s NCAA tournament games, he’s excited to get his shot against the Tigers.

“I was on the sidelines watching my guys have out there,” Martin added. “So, I’m looking forward to having my own fun.”

Will Richard scored 12 points in the Gators victory at Auburn. He explained how pivotal that game was as Florida loss just one game since defeating the Tigers.

“Going to their place and winning is hard to do,” Richard said. “It was special to do that this year, and it proved to us who we are.”

Auburn will meet the No. 1 seed Florida Gators Saturday, with the winner advancing to the national championship game. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:09 p.m.
