Second victim dies from Sunday Morgan County shooting

A second victim has died from injuries in a Sunday night shooting in Morgan County.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office said the victim, whose name has not yet been released, had been in critical condition since the shooting.

“Investigators are in the process of filing additional charges against the individual arrested in connection to the incident,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Morgan County authorities yesterday charged Joshua Lamar Knighten, 35, of Falkville, with capital murder in connection with the shooting. Knighten was arrested at the scene of the shooting in the 50 block of Goodwin Road.

The capital murder charge alleges Knighten shot Mitchell Ray Beard, 62, of Falkville, to death while Beard was inside a vehicle.

The shootings took place at 53 SE Goodwin Road, off Wilhite Road. According to sheriff’s spokesman Mike Swafford, Knighten was living at the Goodwin Road address.

Deputies were called to the scene and found one person dead, later identified as Beard. They also found one person suffering from a gunshot wound, the sheriff’s office said.

Another person with a gunshot wound left the area before deputies arrived and went to the Falkville Town Hall.

Knighten called 911 after the shooting and told the dispatcher, “They are going to lock me up for the rest of my life,” according to Brooks’ affidavit.

Knighten was one of two people detained at the scene. The other was later released.
