Did a tornado hit Dothan? Weather service to investigate after students injured at school

The National Weather Service plans to send storm survey teams to two locations today that had damage in Monday’s storms.

One of those places is the Dothan area in Houston County, where a school was damaged and several students injured when a tornado-warned storm moved through the area.

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Fla., whose area of responsibility includes five southeast Alabama counties, said it is planning to look at storm damage in the area today.

Another team from the weather service in Birmingham plans to go to Lamar and Fayette counties in northwest Alabama, where another tornado-warned storm is blamed for damage.

The weather service will look at the damage and use it to determine whether it was caused by a tornado or straight-line winds.

If a tornado is confirmed then it will be given a preliminary rating using the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which runs from EF-0 to EF-5.

The weather service will issue updates later today on what the survey teams found.

Severe storms moved from north to south Alabama from late Sunday night into Monday afternoon and spawned several tornado warnings and multiple severe thunderstorm warnings.
