How Ryan Grubb’s Alabama football salary stacks up with other SEC offensive coordinators

Alabama football got a bit of a bargain on its new offensive coordinator. Ryan Grubb will make $1 million for the next two seasons, according to the contract approved Friday by UA’s board of trustees compensation committee.

Weirdly enough, Grubb will actually make less than co-OC and QB coach Nick Sheridan, from whom he took over the primary coordinator and playcalling duties. According to Greg Byrne, that’s because of the structure of Grubb’s contract with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, who fired Grubb after the 2024 campaign.

As a result, Grubb will be on the low end of SEC offensive coordinator salary rankings for 2025. While Sheridan’s $1.45 million for the season would have placed him sixth on the list of public SEC schools (excluding Vanderbilt, which is private and does not release coach contracts), Grubb sits in a tie for 10th, with LSU’s Joe Sloan, both one spot behind South Carolina OC and former Tide head coach Mike Shula.

Ole Miss’ Charlie Weis Jr. leads the list of SEC salaries and will make $1.75 million according to the Clarion-Ledger. Texas A&M’s Collin Klein lands just below Weis, at $1.7 million for 2025, according to GigEm247.

Other highly paid OCs for next season include Bobby Petrino at Arkansas, Georgia’s Mike Bobo and Oklahoma’s Ben Arbuckle. On the low end, Tennessee’s Joey Halzle and Auburn’s Derrick Nix are both under $1 million, and Florida’s Russ Callaway, who served as a co-OC in 2024 before taking over the primary duties this offseason, made $550,000 last year.

As of Friday, here’s where the SEC OCs rank in terms of reported salary.
