Mountain Brook urologist and Donald Trump donor Brian Christine nominated for assistant secretary for health
A Mountain Brook urologist who donated more than $8,500 to Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign was nominated this week by the president to be assistant secretary for health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Dr. Brian Christine, a urologic surgeon at Urology Centers of Alabama’s Homewood location, was described by the Alabama Republican Party as “a longtime Conservative grassroots activist and dedicated supporter” of the party.
In 2024, the Alabama urologist contributed $8,505 to Trump’s campaign committees, Federal Election Commission records showed.
The Senate received Trump’s nomination of Christine on Monday and sent it to the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, where Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., is a member.
If confirmed, Christine would succeed Adm. Rachel Levine, who resigned after Joe Biden left office in January.
Levine, a pediatrician who was the highest-ranking Senate-confirmed transgender woman in government, had been used by conservatives as an example of Biden’s “woke” administration.
“Dr. Christine has been a steadfast advocate for strong, patient-centered healthcare policies, and we have no doubt he will bring the same passion and commitment to this new role,” the Alabama GOP stated on its Facebook page. “We look forward to seeing his work alongside Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr to Make America Healthy Again!”
The Wall Street Journal reported Christine’s practice advertised its treatment of transgender patients.
Christine denied treating transgender patients.
Christine is a graduate of Emory University Medical School in Atlanta, according to his bio. He completed his urology residency at UAB.
He started out practicing general urology before focusing on men’s sexual health and prosthetic urology.
“Dr. Christine’s practice is recognized here in the United States and internationally as a true Center of Excellence,” his bio stated. “He has treated patients from throughout the U.S. and from beyond his country’s borders. Dr. Christine’s surgical volume is among the highest in the world; the number of surgeries he performs annually for erectile dysfunction, penile curvature, and male stress urinary incontinence place his skill at the highest level. He is a sought-after expert and routinely is asked by medical device companies to give his opinions and insights to help improve existing prosthetic implants and develop future devices.”
