1 teen dead, another jailed following botched robbery attempt in Florence, police say
One teen is dead and another jailed following a shooting Wednesday afternoon in Florence.
Officers were dispatched just after 4 p.m. to Southern Oaks Apartments on Hermitage Drive. When they arrived, they found a juvenile dead in the parking lot, said Sgt. Ryan Kelly.
Detectives immediately began gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
While they were on the scene, a person showed up at the Florence Police Department to talk about what happened.
Investigators determined the slain juvenile and another teen planned to rob a third person – the one who showed up at the police department.
Detectives worked throughout the night into early Thursday, carrying out search warrants in Franklin and Colbert counties. Kelly said. The Florence/Lauderdale SWAT team assisted.
The surviving juvenile was taken into custody about 3 a.m. He is charged with felony murder and first-degree robbery.
Police did not release his name because of his age.
Under Alabama’s accomplice liability, a person can be charged if they are participating in a felony crime that results in a death, whether or not that person actually pulled the trigger.
The young suspect went before a judge on Thursday. Bond for the teen is set at $100,000.
