Grocery store chain closing four Alabama stores forever
Winn-Dixie is closing four locations in three Alabama cities, the grocer announced today.
The four stores are located at:
- 6300 Grelot Road in Mobile
- 5440 Hwy 90 West in Mobile
- 3952 U.S. 80 in Phenix City
- 3925 Crosshaven Drive in Vestavia Hills.
The closures are anticipated between late April and mid-May and are not a part of ALDI’s conversion plans.
However, in a statement, the company said it is also not the beginning of a larger trend of store closures.
Instead, the decision “aligns with our ongoing efforts to ensure the long-term health and sustainability of our business,” the company stated.
All affected employees who are eligible and wish to continue working with the company will be given the opportunity to apply to transfer to open positions at neighboring stores, according to Southeastern Grocers. Those who do not transfer to another Winn-Dixie location will receive severance.
Aldi is converting 220 Winn-Dixie and Harvey’s stores it previously acquired, including stores in Alabama, into Aldi locations. Earlier this year, Aldi announced it is selling roughly 170 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores to a consortium, along with Winn-Dixie’s liquor store business.
