Trump would ‘love’ for DOGE to defund NPR and PBS: ‘Money that’s being wasted’
President Donald Trump said he would be “honored” to see National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service be defunded by his administration.
Trump’s comments were made Tuesday after a reporter asked if he would be interested in taking away taxpayer dollars to the two public services.
“Well, I would love to do that,” Trump said.
“I think it’s very unfair. It’s been very biased the whole group, I mean, the whole group of them. And frankly, there’s plenty of the media you have right now. There’s plenty of coverage…So the kind of money that’s being wasted, and it’s a very biased view, you know that better than anybody, and I’d be honored to see it.”
The reporter’s question was in reference to the Department of Government Efficiency sub-committee holding a hearing Wednesday to review funding for NPR and PBS.
The chief executive officers for each public service are slated to testify during the hearing.
Republican lawmakers and presidents have threatened to cut funding for PBS and NPR for years, claiming they both have a liberal bias in their reporting.
Alabama Rep. Dale Strong, R-Monrovia, introduced legislation in February to defund NPR.
Trump indicated that funding for NPR and PBS could be cut by DOGE under the administration’s partisan evaluation that it is, “waste, fraud and abuse.”
