Stop mocking Gulf of America or Washington, D.C. renaming is next, congresswoman warns Democrats
She doesn’t find the digs at the Gulf of America funny.
A high-profile Republican congresswoman warned Democrats on Tuesday that the GOP will set its sights on the nation’s capital if they can’t refrain from mocking the newly named Gulf of America.
“I would caution my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to refrain from making fun of the Gulf of America, because next up may be the District of America that we’re working on,” said Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo, during a House Natural Resources subcommittee hearing Tuesday.
“So just keep the jokes at bay … and maybe we’ll just stick to the Gulf of America for now,” said Boebert.
Boebert’s threat appears to be based on a fake recording of Trump circulating on social media in which the president purportedly seeks to rename the District of Columbia to the District of America.
The Colorado congresswoman’s comments appeared to be in response to Rep. Val Boyle, D-Ore., who at the hearing said Republicans are prioritizing a bill sponsored by Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene, R-Ga., codifying the Gulf of America renaming into law ahead of more “pressing issues.”
“This does nothing to bring down costs for Americans to address the broken Social Security system … this does nothing to bring back the healthcare workers who take care of our veterans,” Boyle said.
“This does nothing to address the massive security breach in which war plans were sent on unsecured devices accidentally to a member of the press,” she continued. “These are pressing issues. Our trade wars .. are not being addressed, but we’re renaming the Gulf of Mexico. I don’t think that should be one of our priorities …”
According to a Fox News poll released last week, the Gulf of America renaming is among President Donald Trump’s least unpopular policies; only the proposal to acquire to Greenland ranks worse among registered voters.
