Witnesses, clues sought in unsolved 2023 Birmingham murders of 2 men found shot in car
It’s been nearly two years since a hail of gunfire in a Birmingham neighborhood left two men dead, and police are once again asking for help in bringing justice to their grieving families.
Deforest Chanier Kines, Jr., 28, of Birmingham, and Cardarrius Bryant, 30, of Fultondale, were killed July 13, 2023.
East Precinct officers were alerted to the shooting by a neighbor who called 911 reporting shots fired.
The call came in just before 10 a.m. that Thursday.
A patrol officer responded to the 500 block of Zinnia Lane and found a silver sedan that was peppered by gunfire, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
The officer looked into the vehicle and saw the victims unresponsive. Both had been shot.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced them dead on the scene.

“Based on how our officer discovered them, it does not appear they were driving or in motion,’’ he said.
“Our detectives are working to determine if the suspect shot them on foot or in a vehicle.”
At least one neighbor told police about hearing the shots seeing someone standing in the roadway.
Fitzgerald said there were numerous shots fired at the sedan.
Few leads have emerged in the investigation. A reward of up to $5,000 is available through Crime Stoppers.
Anyone with information is asked to call Birmingham police at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
