‘I Can Only Imagine 2’ set for release, directed by Alabama native
Birmingham-born film director Andrew Erwin will co-direct the sequel to the 2018 hit movie “I Can Only Imagine,” set for release by Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company on March 20, 2026.
The sequel, “I Can Only Imagine 2,” continues the life story of Bart Millard, lead singer of MercyMe, and carries on the title shared with Millard’s most popular song, “I Can Only Imagine.”
That song became the best-selling Christian single of all time.
John Michael Finley will return in the role of Bart Millard.
Dennis Quaid will return as Arthur and Trace Adkins will continue his portrayal of MercyMe manager Scott Brickell.
The first movie had a production budget of $7 milion, but made more than $83 million at the U.S. box office.
Erwin is set to co-direct with Brent McCorkle, who wrote the screenplay.
Erwin’s brother, Jon Erwin, is co-directing the Prime Video TV series, “House of David,” which just got renewed for a second season. They both were born in Birmingham and grew up in Alabama.
