South Alabama basketball standout headed to transfer portal

South Alabama basketball standout Myles Corey plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, coach Richie Riley confirmed to AL.com on Wednesday.

Corey, a 6-foot guard, averaged 13.8 points and a team-best 4.3 assists per game for the Jaguars after transferring in from Jessup University, an NAIA school in California. The Ontario, Calif., native was a fifth-year senior this season, but received an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA following the Diego Pavia ruling in December.

Corey is one of two South Alabama players who have plans to enter the portal, along with forward Ethan Kizer. The 6-foot-5 Kizer averaged 1.9 points and 1.7 rebounds per game as a true freshman in 2023-24, but redshirted this season.

Kizer announced his departure via social media:

South Alabama finished 21-11 this season, sharing the Sun Belt Conference regular-season championship before losing in the conference tournament semifinals. The Jaguars’ season ended abruptly after they were first invited to the NIT on Sunday, only to have that invitation withdrawn in controversial fashion.

A number of other South Alabama players with remaining eligibility have not yet announced their future plans, including All-Sun Belt Conference forward Barry Dunning, starting forward John Broom, guard J.J. Wheat and forward Julian Margrave. The transfer portal officially opens for 30 days beginning Monday.
