Huntsville embarking on $1.1 million street project in front of the Von Braun Center

A $1.1 million street project in front of the Von Braun Center has been given the green light.

The Huntsville City Council approved a contract with Miller & Miller, Inc. to make streetscaping improvements to Monroe Street from Clinton to Williams Avenue.

“We’re excited to bring these improvements to Monroe Street, enhancing both its functionality and aesthetic appeal,” Mayor Tommy Battle said in a statement on the city’s website. “With the ongoing redevelopment in the area, these upgrades will help create a more vibrant, welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.”

The project will span 1,000 linear feet and include the installation of new sidewalks, streetlights, landscaping, irrigation and asphalt resurfacing. Work is expected to be completed within 90 days after notice to proceed is issued.

This project is part of ongoing efforts to revitalize the area, especially with the final completion of the Marriott Autograph Trilogy Hotel across from the Von Braun Center. The hotel, with one of the largest Starbucks in Alabama, is expected to be completed by late summer.

Construction on the $375 million mixed-use Front Row development continues on the corner of Clinton Avenue and Monroe Street on the site of the former Coca Cola plant.

The development will include 545 high-end residential units, 36,000 square feet of modern Class-A office space, and 47,000 square feet of retail space. The first phase of the development is expected to be completed next year.

Monroe Street has already seen several redevelopment initiatives, including improvements to the Von Braun Center and a new city parking deck within this area.

With the completion of these projects, the city is updating Monroe Street to add landscaping and irrigation, two large decorative pedestrian crossings — one near the parking deck and the other near Big Spring Park — and resurfacing the entire roadway.
