Man found shot dead in Birmingham road is city’s first homicide in 1 month

A man was found shot to death on a Birmingham road, the city’s first homicide in one month.

West Precinct officers were dispatched at 7 p.m. Saturday to a report of a person down at the intersection of Avenue E and 16th Street in Ensley.

Police arrived to find the adult male unresponsive in the roadway. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.

It wasn’t immediately clear what had caused his fatal injuries.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Sunday determined the victim, who has not yet been identified, had been shot, said Sgt. LaQuitta Wade.

Wade said there were no reports of shots fired in the area or any Shot Spotter notifications. Whether he was killed there, or some other location, remains under investigation.

The victim is the city’s 17th homicide so far this year, and the first since Feb. 15 when a 21-year-old man was shot to death behind a vacant home, also in Ensley.

In late 2009 and early 2010, Birmingham went 39 days without a homicide. In 2014, the city went 31 days without a homicide.

Last week, Interim Police Chief Michael Pickett spoke on the decrease of homicides in the city and provided an update on his plan to combat violent crime.
