Atmore church destroyed after lightning strikes during severe storm: Photos

First Presbyterian Church of Atmore was destroyed Saturday night by a massive fire as severe storms hit Alabama, according to a report by Escambia.com.

Neighbors reported seeing lighting strikes in the area before the fire at the church, 208 E. Horner St. Preliminary information indicated the fire may have been sparked by a lightning strike during a heavy thunderstorm just before 11 p.m.

The fire likely started near where the church’s old sanctuary joins a fellowship hall and classrooms, the report said. The steeple and cross collapsed as the fire spread through the attic and the church was engulfed in flames.

Firefighters from across the area responded to the fire, including the Atmore, Barnett Crossroads, Poarch Creek, Little Rock and Nokomis fire departments from Alabama, and the Walnut Hill Station of Escambia, Florida, Fire Rescue, with additional personnel from Florida. The Atmore Police Department and other agencies also responded to fire.

No injuries have been reported as of Sunday morning. The fire remains under investigation.

Across the state, severe weather and tornados caused two deaths and multiple reports of damaged buildings and vehicles.
