Former daycare worker arrested for allegedly throwing baby into crib, scooping rock out of its mouth
A woman was arrested Thursday after allegedly abusing an 8-month-old child as an employee of a Mobile daycare facility, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.
In a release, MCSO stated that Kia Baldwin was charged with one count of child abuse for allegedly causing several injuries to an infant on February 18 while working at Lighthouse Academy.
The family of the child filed a complaint with the Prichard Police Department and Department of Human Resources. MCSO took over the case on March 11.
The sheriff’s office said that on February 19, Baldwin told to the Lighthouse Academy director that she saw the eight month old put a rock in his mouth.
According to the agency, Baldwin stated she performed a “finger sweep” while trying to get the rock from the infant’s mouth.
Baldwin said that she caused injuries to the child’s neck but did not choke him.
MCSO said that surveillance footage of the incident allegedly showed Baldwin picking the infant up from the floor and violently throwing him down into the crib.
Baldwin was fired after the incident and the sheriff’s office detailed the extent of the child’s injuries allegedly caused by Baldwin.
“As a result of Baldwin’s actions, the infant sustained bruising on the left side and back of his neck, bruising on his upper left shoulder area, and a small mark on the left side of his jawline, consistent with a fingernail injury,” MCSO said.
Baldwin is being held in Mobile Metro County Jail.
