Faith Academy names long-time assistant as new head football coach
Faith Academy announced the hiring of Gaines Sullivan as the Mobile school’s new head football coach on Thursday.
Sullivan has been a coach at Faith for 15 years, last serving as offensive coordinator for Jack French, who was 55-20 from 2018-2023. Sullivan helped the Rams the playoffs all six years with two appearances in the state playoff semifinals.
Last year, Sullivan led the school’s seventh-grade football team to an undefeated season. He has also served as the girls soccer head coach for the past eight years. Sullivan’s soccer teams compiled a 119-35-4 record with three area championships, three Elite 8 appearances and a Final Four berth.
The coach, who played quarterback and free safety at Davidson High School, also served girls varsity basketball coach at Faith after working as an assistant under Woodie Head for eight seasons.
A news release from the school said, “Coach Sullivan’s passion for sports and for mentoring young athletes is evident in all aspects of his coaching. Known for being reliable, deeply committed to his faith and a loving family man, coach Sullivan has earned the respect of both his players and colleagues. His positive influence extends beyond the field as he takes the time to connect with students in the halls, inspiring excitement for participation in sports. He is dedicated to creating a culture where athletes strive for excellence while maintaining a strong focus on character and teamwork.”
Sullivan is replacing Erik Speakman, who coached the Rams to a 1-8 record in his one season as head coach, with a 1-6 finish in Class 5A, Region 1.
