Popular makeup brand recalls acne treatment for possible cancer-causing ingredient
Makeup company L’Oréal S.A. has issued a recall on its popular acne cream Effaclar Duo due to concern that benzene, a known carcinogen, is in the product.
Last year, independent Connecticut testing lab Valisure, flagged acne products with benzoyl peroxide, like L’Oréal’s, could contain benzene, reports the New York Post.
Valisure called upon the Food and Drug Administration to recall products and issue guidance for products that contain benzoyl peroxide. According to the New York Post, the FDA responded with an interim response letter, but did not issue a recall.
L’Oréal S.A sells the The Effaclar Duo under their French company La Roche Posay. The cream, which sells for $35.99, is billed as a “spot treatment for acne” that “provides fast and visible results in less than 3 days.”
