Are you a sculptor who loves Jimmy Buffett? Here’s the gig for you
With plans already taking shape for a massive Jimmy Buffett exhibition in Mobile, the city is now looking for someone to sculpt a statue of the singer to overlook its waterfront.
As previously reported, the city plans for the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico to house a two-story, 5,000-square-foot exhibition celebrating Buffett’s life and music. (Although Buffett was born in coastal Mississippi he grew up in Mobile, making key early steps in his recording and performing career.) Plans call for the exhibition to open in fall 2026.
According to information provided by the city administration, the goal is to have a “larger-than-life” bronze work ready to debut with the new exhibition in conjunction with the annual Son of a Sailor Festival in September 2026. The desired work “will depict a realistic, larger-than-life representation of Buffett, including a pedestal or, if seated, a bench or low wall.”
The Mobile Arts Council is a partner in the project and is inviting artists to submit proposals through April 25. Artists are encouraged to “reference images of Buffett from 2000 to 2015 for inspiration.”
According to the city’s announcement of the sculpture process, interested artists can find more information about the project scope and eligibility requirements at mobilearts.org/public-art/buffett/. The webpage includes a link to reference images and a map identifying the site where the statue will stand.
Among other requirements, artists making submissions must be 18 or older and must have experience with projects of this scope. Plans call for the winning artist to be announced at the end of June.
