21-year-old indicted in Birmingham shooting that killed 4 men

A Jefferson County grand jury has indicted a 21-year-old man who was the driver in a Birmingham drive-by shooting that killed four longtime friends.

Lamarion Tykese Charlie, of Birmingham, is charged in the Feb. 16, 2024, shooting deaths of Talton “TJ” Tait, 36, Cortez Ray, 32, Terrell Edwards, 38, and Kevin McGhee, 38.

The grand jury indicted Charlie on capital murder of two or more people and capital murder in the presence of a child under the age of 14. Court records made public Wednesday said the young child of at least one of the victims was there during the deadly shooting.

Charlie remains held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail. He was initially arrested the month after the killings.

The two suspected shooters remain at large.

The shooting happened about 2:45 p.m. that Friday outside Tait’s family home where he ran a neighborhood car wash.

Edwards and Ray, one of whom was there getting a car wash, fell in front of the home near the cars. Tait, a father of four, ran a short distance before collapsing on the side of a neighbor’s house.

All three were pronounced dead on the scene.

McGhee was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Two of the victims, McGhee and Edwards, were cousins.

Edwards was a city employee who started in Public Works and moved to Parks and Recreation. He clocked out just 15 minutes before the deadly shooting and McGhee picked him up.

The shooting was captured on video surveillance cameras and showed the suspects’ vehicle circling the block for about 10 minutes before they opened fire.

Two gunmen dressed in all black were seen exiting the 2022 black Hyundai Elantra and then running back to the car. They left a trail of 37 shell casings from two guns in the wake of their paths, according to court testimony in the case Tuesday.

That Hyundai Elantra was found about five miles away and torched just 20 minutes after the deadly shooting, testimony showed.

Birmingham homicide Det. Jarvelius Tolliver in a May preliminary hearing testified that Charlie, when questioned by detectives, waived his Miranda rights, and admitted to being the driver of the Elantra during the shootings.

The two actual shooters remain at large. Tolliver testified that only one of them has been identified.

Charlie, police said, admitted to the driving the suspect vehicle that day.

Tolliver testified that two cameras in the neighborhood captured the events of that day – one from the Smithfield public housing community and the other from a neighborhood store a block away.

One of the cameras captured only the suspects arriving and leaving, but the second captured the actual shooting.

Tolliver said cameras and Flock license plate readers recorded the suspect vehicle driving around the area for about 10 minutes before the shooting, essentially circling the victims.

The Elantra then stopped in front of Tait’s house.

Tolliver said the driver – now identified as Charlie – stayed in the vehicle, which was on Center Street facing Rev. Abraham Woods Jr. Boulevard.

The passenger in the back seat on the driver’s side exited the vehicle first. He approached the victims, Tolliver said.

Seconds later, the front seat passenger also got out. He was brandishing a long gun and headed toward where the victims were gathered.

Both suspects were wearing all black.

Tolliver said both then ran back to the car. Police recovered 27 shell casings fired from a long gun, and 10 shell casings fired from a 40-caliber gun.

The Elantra sped away and was captured on a Flock camera within 40 seconds of the shooting.

Just 20 minutes later, Tolliver said, Birmingham police were dispatched to a car on fire in the 2700 block of Old Wenonah Road. That car, the detective said, was the 2022 black Hyundai Elantra.

Charlie told detectives he did not know the name of the person in the front passenger’s seat and only knew the first name of the person sitting behind him in the back seat.

Tolliver said neither of the guns used in the deadly shooting have been recovered.
