67-year-old man fleeing police killed in head-on crash that injured Jefferson County deputy

A Birmingham man fleeing police was killed in a Monday crash that also injured a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy.

Alabama State Troopers on Tuesday identified the man killed as Ronald A. Morton. He was 67.

The incident began midday Monday when Pleasant Grove police tried to stop Morton for a traffic violation on Park Road.

Morton, authorities said, took off and moments later collided head-on with a Toyota Highlander driven by Deputy Ardalia N. Marks, who was still in her uniform.

The crash happened about 12:20 p.m. on Ensley Pleasant Grove Road.

Senior Trooper Vu Quang said Morton was not using a seatbelt and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Marks was taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham. Sheriff’s officials said she is expected to survive her injuries.

ALEA is leading the ongoing investigation.
