Basketball roundup: AHSAA teams wrap up regular season
Junior Jackson Weaver hit a pair of free throws with 3 seconds left as Class 7A No. 1 Vestavia Hills edged Class 6A No. 2 Mountain Brook 62-58 before a raucous crowd on the road Friday night.
The win extended the Rebels’ win streak to seven games heading into area tournament play this week. Vestavia is now 23-4 overall. Mountain Brook (20-7) lost for the first time in 2023.
“High school sports are about making memories,” Rebels head coach Patrick Davis said. “When you play in games like this, you remember them. I feel like we have an advantage there because we play in these types of atmospheres all the time.”
The Rebels placed four players in double figures led by senior Win Miller, who finished with a game-high 19 points. Jordan Ross, a 6-foot-5 junior, finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds and spent time guarding Ty Davis, who led the Spartans with 15 points.
“It’s a regular-season game, but we treat it like the biggest game of the year because it’s Mountain Brook,” Miller said.
Weaver and Ben Evans scored in double figures for Vestavia Hills as well. Evans scored 10 points and Weaver, who hit a 3-pointer from beyond half-court at the end of the quarter third to give the Rebels the lead, finished with 13.
“Everybody knows about Batman (Win Miller). Our Robin is really, really good,” Davis said. “Jackson Weaver is so tough. He’ll do whatever we need him to do. He loves to guard your best guy – just tough as old rusty nails.”
Miller said of Weaver, “When he steps up in those types of games, he’s a problem. He’s someone to look out for when I graduate.”
Ross’ size in the paint was a major factor as well for the Rebels.
“We need that because they were undersized. They didn’t have any bigs,” Ross said. “We realized they could use me to an advantage because there wasn’t any rim protection under the goal.”
“He’s just a beast! He plays so hard, so physical,” the Rebels’ Davis added. “He stays within himself and doesn’t try to do more than he can do.”
Though Ty Davis has been the Spartans’ leading scorer this season, he was relegated to a facilitator at points of this game.
“We played pretty good,” Mountain Brook head coach Tyler Davis said. “We didn’t rebound like a championship team does and didn’t make enough free throws. So, on Feb. 3 we are not where we need to be.”
Class 7A Area 5 top seed Vestavia Hills will meet Thompson at 5:30 p.m. to open the tournament on Wednesday. No. 2 seed Hoover plays No. 3 Tuscaloosa County at 7 p.m.
Class 6A Area 10 top seed Mountain Brook plays Woodlawn at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Second-seeded Shades Valley opens the tournament at 6 p.m. against No. 3 Pell City.

“It’s a great way for us to end the regular season heading into the postseason,” said Cottage Hill head coach Brad Newton. “Our goal this week was just to build some momentum and I felt like we were able to do that tonight.”
CHCA raced out to a 12-7 first period lead and never trailed. Baker cut the lead to 2 in the second quarter, but the Warriors went on an 11-3 run to go up by 10 and took a 29-21 lead into the locker room.
The Hornets would never threaten again as Cottage Hill went on a 14-4 run in the third period to put the game out of reach. The Warriors played reserves for the rest of the game.

“It’s always good to get the young girls the opportunity (to play). They’ve worked so hard during the course of the year. You always want to give them that opportunity to play when you get the chance. It’s a good way to end the year. Now the fun begins.
