SEC Bracket Watch 2025: Where do teams sit on eve of SEC basketball tournament
A week from now, brackets will be printed off and filled out for the 2025 NCAA tournament.
Six days from now, the 68 teams for the 2025 NCAA tournament field will be selected, many of which come from the SEC. It is possible that there will be 13 teams from the SEC entering the field, making this week’s SEC tournament full of storylines and we’ll be able to answer a litany of questions.
Has Alabama done enough to swipe a No. 1 seed from Florida?
Is there anything Auburn can do to potentially lose what had been a stranglehold on the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament?
What SEC teams’ fate for an NCAA bid are on the line this week?
You see where we’re going here.
Before teams hit the court in Nashville, here’s a look at where teams sit, collectively, and in some cases, individually as the SEC tournament is on the horizon.
You’re gonna need a miracle
Dear South Carolina and LSU,
The SEC was an absolute bear this season. I completely understand why you’re going to be kicking off things in games on the first day. The suffering may not last much longer.
Newbies need to impress
Texas and Oklahoma we’re added to the SEC back in July and were supposed to add even more depth across all sports. They certainly did for basketball, but they are sitting well below where anybody would’ve expected them.
In a regular season finale where both OU and Texas needed a win, it was the Sooners who walked out with a 76-72 victory in less than impressive fashion.
Joe Lunardi’s latest bracketology has Oklahoma as one of the last four teams in, while Texas is one of the first four teams out.
You’re in, but let’s not complicate things…
Vanderbilt, Georgia, and Arkansas have put together resume-worthy wins down the stretch of the regular season. Arkansas went on the road to beat Kentucky and followed up with wins over tournament-bound teams Missouri and Mississippi State.
Georgia has beaten Florida in addition to riding a four-game winning streak. However, is it enough for the committee to forget about a 2-9 run during the season? Win a game or two this week, and you’re in good shape.
SEC seeding bonanza
The Thursday and Friday slate for the SEC tournament is full of tournament bound teams simply playing to be the best in the SEC. For at least nine teams, they’re basically playing for seeding when it comes to the NCAA tournament.
The four teams tipping off Thursday’s action (Missouri, Ole Miss, Kentucky, and Texas A&M) could all see their seeding improve a line or two with a deep run in Nashville. A loss early, things might get a bit hairy during the Selection Show.
No. 1 seed musical chairs
For SEC tournament contenders, the real show starts on Friday. Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida all begin their SEC tournament with a shot at a No. 1 seed. While Auburn seems to be the only team who is a lock at this point, both Florida and Alabama may need to beat them (or each other) for a final shot on the one-seed line.
However, imagine if Tennessee can cut the nets down in Nashville. It’s very possible that just an hour or so after the final buzzer sounds, Tennessee could be a No. 1 seed.
