Adult softball player charged with assaulting umpire after being ejected from game in Hoover
A 26-year-old man is in jail, charged in the assault of an umpire during an adult softball game in Hoover.
Michael Tyler Seals, of Odenville, is charged with third-degree assault of a sports official, Hoover police announced Friday. That charge is a Class C felony.
Seals is being held in the Hoover City Jail awaiting transfer to the Shelby County Jail.
Officers were called just before 7 p.m. Thursday to the Spain Park Sports Complex on Valleydale Road on a report of an umpire being assaulted.
Lt. Daniel Lowe said police determined that Seals became upset after being called out on a play.
“The player’s behavior escalated, and he was ejected from the game by an umpire,’’ Lowe said.
As the officiating crew attempted to have the player leave the field, he assaulted the 51-year-old male umpire, Lowe said,
The attack was stopped by a group of witnesses and Seals fled the area.
He was taken into custody a short time later during a traffic stop.
Lowe said the umpire suffered minor, but visible, injuries.
