Spring sports roundup: Gardendale boys soccer squad gets pair of shutout wins
Gardendale High School’s boys soccer team rolled to a pair of big wins this week to improve to 8-0 on the season.
The Rockets, ranked ninth in Class 6A, blanked Mortimer Jordan 7-0 on the road on Wednesday and whipped Woodlawn 10-0 at home at Driver Stadium on Monday.
Chris Bean and Mikey Pribyl scored two goals apiece for Gardendale in the win at Mortimer Jordan. Wyatt Chandler and Eli Parker scored a goal apiece in the win. The Rockets also benefitted from a Mortimer Jordan own goal.
Goalkeeper Connor Thomas earned his fourth shutout of the season.

The Rockets blanked Woodlawn in a mercy rule-shortened 10-0 win on Monday, scoring 3 goals in the final 1:31 of the first half.
Gardendale’s Chandler scored 5 goals on the night, including the first of the final 3 in the game. Logan Stewart scored with 33 seconds remaining on an assist from Steven Castro. Pribyl then scored with 16 seconds remaining on an assist from Bean.
Chandler scored just 21 seconds into the game and scored twice on penalty kicks. Bean finished with 2 goals and an assist and Stewart also scored twice. Thomas earned the clean sheet in goal.
The Rockets return to action on Friday at Hewitt-Trussville.

Homewood 12, Parker 1
The Patriots won their third straight Class 6A, Area 9 game with the win on Wednesday at Parker after topping the Herd 12-0 and 22-0 in a doubleheader at home on Monday.
In Wednesday’s win, Homewood’s Jack Ross went 2-for-2 with a double and a triple with an RBI and Jack Bland drove in 2 runs on 2 hits. Will Dobbins was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Will Siegel tripled and drove in a run.
Sophomore James Eady earned the win, allowing 1 hit with 4 strikeouts and no walks.
In the two 5-inning shutouts on Monday, Southern Union signee Ross improved to 3-0 on the mound, combining with Bland, Cooper Sain and Justin Gamble for a no-hitter. The Homewood pitchers struck out 11 and walked 3.
Levi Nickoli, a junior Auburn commitment, got the win in Game 2 – combining with Ben Roberts and Dobbins for a 1-hitter with 11 strikeouts and a walk.
Dobbins had 5 hits with a home run and 6 RBIs on the day. Ross tripled and smacked a home run and had 5 RBIs. Roberts had 3 hits, including a triple, with 4 RBIs. Cooper Mullins had a 3-run homer, Drew Susce doubled with 2 RBIs and Conner Brunner had 2 hits with an RBI.
Enterprise 6, Homewood 0
The Wildcats improved to 10-0 with the shutout over Homewood (9-2) in the Terry Sikes Memorial Tournament at Troy University on Thursday. Enterprise senior right-hander Brady Richardson struck out 16 Patriots batters and gave up 2 hits – a triple by Nickoli Levi and a double by Jack Ross – on the way to the 7-inning complete-game win. The Troy commitment did not walk a Homewood batter.
Enterprise scored a pair of runs in the first inning, added another in the fifth and pushed across 3 in the seventh.
Cayden Boutwell went 3-for-3 for the Wildcats with a double and an RBI. Brady Richardson was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and 3 runs scored in the win. Brady Cavanaugh went 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs.
Homewood will play Shelby County and Oak Mountain in the event on Friday.
Hueytown 6, Mortimer Jordan 3
Hunter Syx ripped a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the fifth inning as Hueytown rallied to knock off Mortimer Jordan at home on Monday. The senior left fielder finished 3-for-4 at the plate and scored a run.
Leadoff hitter Sam Vaughan went 2-for-4 with a double for the Golden Gophers and Bronson Moore, Baker Davis and Rodrequis Houston also had hits on the day.
Vaughan earned the win with 4 innings in relief of starter Moore. Vaughan gave up an unearned run on 1 hit with 4 strikeouts and a walk on the day. Moore allowed 2 earned runs on 5 hits with 3 strikeouts and a walk.
Jeremiah Tingle took the loss for the Blue Devils, allowing 6 runs – 4 earned – on 8 hits with 5 strikeouts and a walk. John Dean went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Braylon Disko was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Kye West and Bryce Funderburk also had hits.
HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY
New Hope 5-17, North Jackson 4-0
The Indians swept North Jackson at home on Thursday with an extra-inning squeaker and a second-game no-hit blowout.
The Game 1 win took 8 innings, but winning pitcher Dawson Cambron finished it with a walk-off RBI single. On the mound, he allowed an earned run on 3 hits while striking out 9 in 5.2 innings. Cambron’s hit was his first in 4 at-bats as he drove in 2 runs on the day.
New Hope’s Grant Maples also allowed an earned run on 4 hits with 2 strikeouts in 2.1 innings’ work. He also went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Andrew Dudley, Layton Pohl, Hudson Layne and Brody Gowan also had hits in the win.
Dudley pitched a 5-inning complete game no-hitter in the second contest, striking out 8. He also drove in 2 runs to help his cause.
Pohl tripled in 2 at-bats with 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Maples went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base. Cambron went 2-for-4 with a double and RBIs. Lucas Terry was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs, Gowan was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a stolen base and Drake Dempsey added a hit.

Montgomery Academy 14, Montgomery Catholic 11
The Eagles earned the home win over Montgomery Catholic on Tuesday, pounding out 14 hits on the day and using two big innings to put the game out of reach. Montgomery Academy fell behind 6-0 before scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the third and adding six more in the fourth.
Montgomery Academy’s Chapman Baker went 3-for-4 with 6 RBIs, thanks to a pair of bases-clearing doubles. John Allen Jones was also 3-for-4 with an RBI. William Marks and Reid McBride also had a pair of doubles each.
Vincent Desautels and Andrew Hosein had 2 hits each. Nathan Applegate also had a hit and Oscar Fiore picked up an RBI.
McBride earned the win, allowing 6 runs on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts in 3 innings. Hosein pitched 2.2 innings in relief, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts. Baker pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing a run on 1 hit with 2 strikeouts.
On Monday, Montgomery Academy topped LAMP 4-2 in its final game in the Jason Armstrong FCA Tournament at Riverwalk Stadium.
Marks earned the win for the Eagles in relief of starter Fiore, allowing 1 hit in 2 innings with 4 strikeouts. Fiore went 2.1 innings, giving up a pair of runs on 4 hits. Desautels relieved Marks for the final 2.2 innings, allowing 2 hits.
Desautels, Jones and Hosein had 2 hits apiece in the win. Jones and Desautels both had an RBI, as did Fiore. McBride, Paxton Haigler and Marks also had a hit for the Eagles.
The 6-1 Eagles will play at Highland Home on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
TENNIS
Montgomery Academy 9, Smiths Station 0
The Eagles ran their record to 8-1 with the win over Smiths Station on Wednesday, their second sweep of the day at Lagoon Park in Section 2 play. Earlier, Montgomery Academy beat Dothan 9-0.
Singles winners in both matches were John Alford, Jackson Brown, Ford Morano, Edwin Wu, Liam Baker and Anton Yang. Doubles winners in both matches were Alford/Brown, Morano/Wu and Yang/Bo Johnston.
Montgomery Academy travels to Dothan on Monday to meet Houston Academy.

Baldwin County 7, Gulf Shores 0
The Tigers improved to 8-2 with their second shutout of the week, beating Gulf Shores on the road on Thursday in their Class 6A, Area 2 opener.
Madilyn Byrd struck out 12, allowing 2 hits over 7 innings for Baldwin County. Byrd walked 3 Gulf Shores batters.
Temple Albritton went 3-for-4 with a triple and a pair of singles with an RBI in the win. Addison Hadley, Brooke McGowin and Nassar Brooks also had multiple hits for the Tigers. Hadley also had a pair of stolen bases.
Anna Leigh Price took the loss for the Dolphins, allowing 7 runs – 5 earned – on 10 hits with 9 strikeouts and 2 walks over 7 innings. Madison Nelson and Rhyleah Gleber had hits for Gulf Shores.
The Tigers got a pair of solo home runs from sophomore Madisyn Williams as Baldwin County blanked Faith Academy 4-0 on Monday. She also earned the win in the circle, striking out 13 and allowing 3 hits with a walk in 7 innings.
Larkyn Anthony took the loss for Faith, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits with 7 strikeouts and 4 walks in 6 innings. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
BIRMINGHAM
Thompson 11, Hewitt-Trussville 2
The Warriors pushed across a run in the bottom of the first inning to knot the score after Corey Goguts slapped a solo home run in the top of the inning, but Thompson (13-1) put the game out of reach with 3 runs in the second, 5 in the third and another in the fourth.
Kadyn Bush’s sacrifice fly tied the game in the first before Blakely Davis drove in a run with a single, Olivia Tindall and Morgan Adolphus both then singled in a run to put the Warriors ahead for good.
In the third, Mallory Flournoy and Tindall had RBIs singles, Kelsey Buren had a sac fly RBI and Josie Hamm was hit by a pitch to bring in a run.
Bush earned the win for Thompson, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits in 5.1 innings. She struck out 5 and did not walk a batter. Lexi Kelley gave up a hit with a strikeout in 1.2 innings of relief.
Jaiden Moody took the loss for the 7-6 Huskies, allowing 5 runs on 5 hits with a strikeout in 1.2 innings.

Brantley 3, Luverne 0
The Bulldogs improved to 4-2 on the year with the home shutout win over Luverne on Thursday.
Brantley’s Alex Grimes struck out 14 and gave up 2 hits in the win. Marley Kilcrease and Savannah Nichols both had a hit and an RBI.
On Monday, Grimes struck out 15 as Brantley beat Andalusia 10-5 on the road. Grimes also helped her cause with a hit, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs.
Kilcrease had 3 hits, including a double, with 2 RBIs. Coco Stamps also had 3 hits and 2 runs scored. Nichols had a pair of hits in the win.
Lee-Scott Academy 10, Montgomery Academy 0
Addison Mezick threw a no-hitter for Lee-Scott Academy on Monday, striking out 10 in the 5-inning contest.
The Warriors got 12 hits and capitalized on 5 Montgomery Academy errors.
Brianna Totty smacked a home run and doubled on the way to a 3-for-4 performance with 3 RBIs. Emmie Hartzog was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, Britt Harris was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Railey Langford was 1-for-1 with a run batted in. McKenzie Johnson went 2-for-2 for Lee-Scott.
EG Hines went 3 innings in the circle for Montgomery Academy and struck out 2. Davis Anne Fitzpatrick struck out 2 in 2 innings.
Prattville Christian 15, BTW-Tuskegee 0
Prattville Christian ran its record to 14-1 on the season with the shutout and a forfeit win over Booker T. Washington of Tuskegee at home on Thursday.
Colbie Martin picked up the win in the circle, striking out 8 in 3 innings.
Chasiti Lindsey, Megan Masters and Saniyah Weaver were all 2-for-2 at the plate. Lindsey finished with 3 RBIs and Masters had 2.
On Tuesday, the Panthers beat Marbury 7-3 at home with Alivia Messick pitching a complete game. She struck out 14 batters and allowed a pair of hits.
Weaver went 3-for-4 at the plate in the win. Peyton Thrash drove in a pair of runs.
PCA will host a tournament this weekend against Scottsboro, Auburn and Brewbaker Tech.

BIRMINGHAM
Gardendale 1, Mortimer Jordan 1
The Rockets tied Mortimer Jordan on the road on Wednesday.
Gardendale’s Tindel Holsomback scored the lone Rockets goal on an assist from Kendyll Wilson.
HUNTSVILLE
Westminster Christian 8, Buckhorn 0
Top-ranked Class 5A Westminster Christian flexed its muscles with a 8-0 shutout of 6A Buckhorn on Thursday.
The Wildcats outshot the Bucks 23-3, with Westminster goalkeeper Piper Blazier stopping all three shots from Buckhorn.
Freshman Ava Martinez had a hat trick for Westminster, scoring two goals in the first half and one in the second half.
Freshman Alondra Pierce scored two and Calli Sloan, Gabby Dean and Annie Collier all scored one goal.
Collier, Martinez and Caleigh Lewis all had one assist and Pierce had two.
Westminster (5-1) will be off next week for spring break and will host Class 1A/3A No. 5 Madison Academy on March 18.

Saint James 2, Brewbaker Tech 0
Stella Williams got the second straight shutout of her career as the 10th-ranked Class 4A Trojans, the 1A/3A state champions last season, blanked Brewbaker Tech on Thursday.
KK Corley scored a goal and got an assist for Saint James. Elliette Barton got her second goal of the season – and second of her varsity career. Her sister, Natalie Barton, got an assist on the opening goal.
On Tuesday, Saint James opened its season with a 5-0 road shutout of Stanhope Elmore.
Natalie Barton, fresh off scoring 17 points in an overtime loss in the Class 3A state basketball championship game last week, recorded a hat trick in the win. The sophomore also had an assist.
Elliette Barton and Sana Shuford also scored goals for Saint James. Barton, Corley, Mayson Barber and Lilla Conner also had assists.
Saint James plays at BTW-Tuskegee at 5:30 p.m. on Friday to open its area schedule.
Prattville Christian 10, Percy Julian 0
Anabelle Weedon recorded a hat trick as the Panthers blanked Percy Julian at home on Thursday to move to 3-1 on the season.
Elizabeth Rossi scored 2 goals and had an assist for Prattville Christian. Mady Roy also had 2 goals. Baylee Rogers, Morgan Lisle and Mady Boyett also had goals in the win. Addison Sutton finished with 3 assists.
Scarlett Mahlke recorded the shutout in goal.
PCA will host Trinity on Friday.
Glenwood School 2, Prattville Christian 2
(Glenwood won 3-1 in a shootout)
Glenwood School topped Prattville Christian at home in a 3-1 shootout on Tuesday as sophomore Nichole Bowen, junior Emma Barnes and senior MaKenna Casner connected on the penalty kicks.
Casner scored the Gators’ goals in regulation time.
Anabelle Weedon scored a goal for Prattville Christian and Addison Sutton had an assist.
Montgomery Academy 3, Dothan 0
The Eagles improved to 2-0 in Class 7A, Area 3 play and 4-1 overall with the shutout of Dothan at home on Tuesday.
Senior Sophia Cho scored all three goals – the first to break a scoreless tie in the 25th minute off an assist from Mary Elizabeth Cole, her second 10 minutes later off a pass from Kerstin Daniels and the final early in the second half.
Goalkeeper Arden Horne made several crucial saves to record the clean sheet.
Montgomery Academy hosts Enterprise on Tuesday.
