DeVonta Smith’s top catch of 2024 might not be the one you think

The best catch made by a former Alabama high school or college player, according to the league’s “The Top 100 Catches of the 2024 NFL Season,” belonged to Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith. But it’s not the 46-yard touchdown reception with 2:40 left in the third quarter of Philadelphia’s 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.

That catch came in at No. 86.

The catch that the NFL deemed as the former Alabama All-American’s best during the 2024 campaign – and the eighth-best in the league – was a 25-yard touchdown reception with 7:43 remaining in the Eagles’ 28-23 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Nov. 3.

Smith’s catches were among the 19 made by players with Alabama football roots that appear among the top 100 for the 2024 season.

Former Alabama All-American Amari Cooper had five of the receptions even though his 44 catches in 2024 were the fewest of any of his 10 NFL seasons. Cooper’s top catches also were made for two teams. The No. 24 reception on the list came when Cooper played for the Cleveland Browns. The catches ranked at No. 22, No. 31, No. 82 and No. 98 came after he had been traded to the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 15.

Five other wide receivers from Alabama high schools and colleges appear in the top 100 multiple times:

Also on the list with the No. 46 catch is Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs (Alabama). Gibbs also appeared four times on “The Top 100 Runs of the 2024 Season.”
