Division I conference moving basketball tournaments to neutral-site location
The Atlantic Sun Conference announced on Wednesday that it will be moving its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments to a neutral site.
Starting in 2026, the quarterfinal, semifinal and championship games of the tournaments will be held at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida, with the first rounds to remain on campus sites.
This marks the first time since 2013 that the ASUN Conference will have basketball tournament games at a single site.
Tournament games were previously held at campus sites, with higher-seeded teams hosting throughout the event; ASUN member North Alabama hosted the men’s quarterfinal game and will host Jacksonville in the semifinal game on Thursday.
“The decision to move the tournaments to Jacksonville represents a significant milestone for the ASUN and underscores the city’s growing reputation as a premier destination for major sporting events,” ASUN Conference commissioner Jeff Bacon said in a release. “The process over the past year has been exhaustive and I have been tremendously impressed by the volume of interest in our tournaments from so many incredible cities and venues.
“In the end, Jacksonville’s passion for sports, alongside its outstanding facilities and hospitality, will create an incredible experience for our student-athletes and fans.”
The 15,000-seat multipurpose arena hosted NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament games in 2010, 2015 and 2019.
Four of the 12 member schools in the ASUN Conference are in Florida (Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville University, North Florida and Stetson), with Jacksonville and North Florida in Jacksonville.
This season, Lipscomb and North Alabama’s men served as the top two seeds in the men’s conference tournament, while Florida Gulf Coast was No. 1 and Central Arkansas served as the No. 2 seed in the women’s tournament.
