How soon will Alabama football name a starting QB?

Day 1 of spring practice is over. Has the Alabama football quarterback competition solved itself yet?

The simple, and pretty obvious, answer to the tongue-in-cheek question — no. But Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer got a chuckle out of it nonetheless.

“They’re all at different points,” DeBoer said. “Few things procedure-wise that were a little different. Good to see those guys all operate through that. They had their times where, of course, they looked really good and times where they got to continue to grow and get better.”

A decision wasn’t made Monday, of course, as for a winner between Ty Simpson, Austin Mack and Keelon Russell, but it’s the first of many data points to come in the competition.

But how soon could Alabama name a starting QB?

If history is any indication, probably not that soon. DeBoer and company could always decide to name a quarterback after the spring, but he has not done that at recent stops.

At Washington, DeBoer (and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb) didn’t name Michael Penix Jr. the starting quarterback until Aug. 23, 2022. The Huskies opened the season Sept. 3, 2022 against Kent State.

At Fresno State, Jake Haener earned the starting job Oct. 20, 2020. The Bulldogs opened the season Oct. 24, 2020 against Hawaii. That was the COVID-19 season.

So there’s a decent possibility the decision will be announced and/or made late August before Alabama faces Florida State on Aug. 30.

Alabama began spring practice Monday, and it will run through A-Day on Saturday, April 12.
