Injured dog in garbage bag tossed into Birmingham dumpster: ‘We are heartbroken and outraged’

A search is underway for a group of men caught on video throwing a garbage bag that held an injured Australia Shepherd into a Birmingham dumpster.

The dog, named Patches, survived but was severely injured, said Allison Black Cornelius, CEO of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.

“We are heartbroken and outraged,’’ Cornelius said. “This sweet dog was stuffed in a garbage bag and thrown in a dumpster. No animal deserves this cruelty.”

Cornelius said the crime was captured on camera about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, in Birmingham’s Midtown area.

The footage showed a white pickup truck carrying lumber pull into an alley between Second Avenue South and Third Avenue South, between 18th and 19th streets.

At least five men got out of the truck, one of them grabbing a large black garbage bag from the truck’s bed. The bag was then tossed into the dumpster.

Cornelius said she believes the men were construction workers.

“We are looking for these folks,’’ she said.

Cornelius said a citizen climbed into the dumpster and saved the life of Patches.

She also thanked Ken Foreman of the Birmingham Housing Authority, Birmingham police Sgt. Heather Campbell and CAPS officer Ryan Smith, all of whom she said, “worked their tails off to save the animal’s life.”

“I’m tired of these stories and I’m really tired of these cases,’’ Cornelius said. “We are going to have to start holding people accountable for this type of behavior if we want it to stop.”
