Beyonce glitters at pre-Grammy festivities, wearing minidress by Alabama fashion designer

Pre-Grammy festivities find Beyonce out on the town and wearing stunning couture creations — including a glittering minidress by an Alabama designer.

Beyonce, a music and fashion powerhouse, is nominated for nine Grammys this year for “Renaissance,” including top categories such as Album of the Year and Single of the Year. There’s no word yet on what she’ll wear to the Sunday ceremony in Los Angeles, but on Saturday night, Queen Bey’s Instagram showed her rocking a minidress by Calechie.

The body-con dress designed by Birmingham’s Kelechi Mitchell boats metallic fabric, a high neck, long sleeves and dramatic draping. Mitchell confirmed that Beyonce’s was wearing his design in an Instagram post for the Calechie brand. “Our Queen @beyonce in CALÉCHIE CUSTOM,” Mitchell wrote. “Thank you @kjmoody.”

It’s unclear where Beyonce was spotted wearing the outfit, but she was styled by K.J. Moody, a stylist based in Los Angeles. Moody’s social media posts also featured Beyonce posing in the Calechie dress.

In a Sunday web post, Harper’s Bazaar praised Beyonce’s Calechie dress, pointing to her “modern pre-Grammy looks.” The story also focused on a futuristic design Gareth Pugh, worn by Beyonce at Saturday’s Roc Nation Brunch.

Here’s what Harper’s Bazaar had to say about Mitchell’s look for Beyonce:

“The ‘Renaissance’ singer also shared a second outfit from her pre-Grammy festivities yesterday, coming a bit closer to Earth in a long-sleeved mock-neck minidress by Caléchie Custom. The piece evoked molten silver with its artfully-wrinkled fabric and adorning curtain sash, which hung past the length of the bodycon bodice.

“Bey finished this look with opaque black tights, open-toed silver platforms, and thin silver hoops from Messika by Kate Moss. She also carried the structural Ruby’s Lost Stone bag from Published By.”

Mitchell, a Birmingham native and the founder of Calechie, is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology and 2018 winner of the Emerging Designers Competition at Magic City Fashion Week.

“Mitchell impressed everyone with his glamourous evening wear collection and his line consisted of glitter, big sleeves, as well as statement hats,” The Birmingham Times said in 2018. “It was glitz and glam which he said was made for women like his eighth-grade teacher from Bottenfield Middle School, who are powerful with a love for some bling in their lives.”

Darren Martin of Sheen Magazine, one of the 2018 judges for Magic City Fashion Week, described Mitchell’s designs for the competition this way: “Everything was completed and it had an edgy look. More importantly it was sexy, sophisticated, and he showed enough skin and then still did not make it raunchy.”

Mitchell appears to be refining that sensibility, five years later, as the prime mover behind the Calechie brand.
