Mourners held a vigil in Birmingham on Saturday evening for a protester killed in Georgia resisting construction of the $90 million police and firefighter training center nicknamed “Cop City.”

The Birmingham chapter of Democratic Socialists of America held the vigil in front of the Birmingham office of Brasfield & Gorrie, which is the primary contractor building the training center on an 85-acre wooded site in Dekalb County, Georgia.

The DSA organization shared photos of the Birmingham vigil on social media.

Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, 26, was shot and killed on the morning of Jan. 18, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Terán went by the name “Tortuguita,” which means “Little Turtle” in Spanish.

Teran was inside a tent in the woods and did not comply with verbal commands from law enforcement officers trying to clear the area, the GBI has said.

When Terán shot and injured a state trooper, other law enforcement officers returned fire and killed Teran, the GBI has said.

Col. Chris Wright, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, said that the injured trooper underwent surgery and was in intensive care.

In September, vandals targeted the Mountain Brook home of M. Miller Gorrie, the chairman of Brasfield & Gorrie. The house, two vehicles and some sculptures on the property were targeted.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens in January told the Rotary Club of Buckhead that the city plans to provide police protection to the construction crews.
