NFL Scouting Combine: Iron Bowl pair among fastest linebackers on Thursday

An Iron Bowl pair ranked among the fastest linebackers running the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday.

UCLA’s Kain Medrano ran the fastest 40 of the position group, covering the distance in 4.46 seconds on the turf at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Auburn’s Eugene Asante had the second-fastest time at 4.48 seconds.

Alabama’s Jihaad Campbell and Oklahoma’s Danny Stutsman tied for third-fastest at 4.52 seconds.

Two other players with Alabama football roots were members of the linebacker group at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine. Florida linebacker Shemar James from Faith Academy in Mobile recorded a 4.69 in the 40. Auburn linebacker Jalen McLeod did not run the 40 on Thursday.

Of the 28 linebackers at the combine, 16 ran the 40.

The other SEC linebackers who ran included:

  • South Carolina’s Demetrius Knight Jr.: 4.58 seconds
  • South Carolina’s Bam Martin-Scott: 4.63 seconds
  • Georgia’s Smael Mondon Jr.: 4.58 seconds
  • Ole Miss’ Chris Paul Jr.: 4.63 seconds

In the other measurable drills on Thursday, the leaders among the linebackers included:

Vertical jump: California’s Teddye Buchanan got the highest off the ground among the linebackers at 40 inches. He edged UCLA’s Carson Schwesinger by one-half inch. Oregon’s Jeffrey Bassa was third-best at 38.5 inches.

Broad jump: Georgia’s Mondon cleared the most ground at 10 feet, 10 inches – 130 inches. That put him 3 inches clear of Alabama’s Campbell, the runner-up. California’s Buchanan and UCLA’s Medrano tied for third at 125 inches.
