South Alabama has hired Broderick Fobbs as running backs coach, head coach Major Applewhite told AL.com on Thursday.

Fobbs, 50, comes to the Jaguars after two seasons in the same position at Sun Belt Conference rival Louisiana-Monroe. He replaces Jayden Everett, who left South Alabama earlier this month without having coached in a game for a job at Minnesota.

Prior to his tenure at ULM, Fobbs was a highly successful head coach at Grambling State from 2014-21. He coached the Tigers to a 54-32 record, including a pair of SWAC championships and the 2016 black college football national title.

Originally from Monroe, La., Fobbs played at Grambling State in the early 1990s. He has also coached at Louisiana, Northwestern State, McNeese State and Southern Miss on the college level, and spent one season as an assistant coach at Ruston (La.) High School before joining the ULM program in 2023.

Fobbs — who joins defensive line coach Jerone Steckel as recent hires by South Alabama head coach Major Applewhite — is the Jaguars’ fourth running backs coach since the end of the 2022 season. Antonio Bradford coached the position in 2023, but was fired by former head coach Kane Wommack at the end of that season.

Applewhite hired Effrem Reed as running backs coach a year ago, but Reed left for Wake Forest after the 2024 season. Everett stayed in Mobile only a few weeks before moving back to the Big Ten, where he’d previously coached at Michigan.

South Alabama went 7-6 in 2024, Applewhite’s first season as head coach. The Jaguars are set to begin spring practice in mid-March.
