Whitesburg Christian hires multi-time state champion to lead boys’ basketball program

A north Alabama Class 6A program will be looking for a new head basketball coach.

Buckhorn’s Patrick Harding will take over as the next head boys’ basketball coach at Whitesburg Christian Academy.

The move was announced in a press conference at Whitesburg Christian on Thursday morning; Harding stepped down at Buckhorn Tuesday.

The veteran coach, who led Buckhorn to Class 6A titles in 2023 and 2024, spent four seasons as the program’s head coach and amassed a record of 86-33 with the Bucks.

His 2024-25 group this season finished 17-8 before falling to Mae Jemison in the Class 6A, Area 16 tournament.

Whitesburg Christian won the Class 3A, Area 14 championship and finished with a 17-13 record, falling to Fyffe in the sub-regional round.

Before being hired at Buckhorn, Harding spent 22 seasons as the head basketball coach at Albertville where he led 13 of his teams to 20-win seasons.

He also had stints as a head coach at D.A.R. and Douglas.

A member of the Marshall County Sports Hall of Fame, Harding was an all-state basketball player at D.A.R. and signed to play college basketball at Snead State before transferring to to Athens State to be a manager and student assistant coach for the basketball team.
