Is Trump doing better than Biden did? Here’s what the latest presidential poll shows
Voters are more optimistic about the direction of the country since the Trump administration took office, according to a new poll.
The Center for American Political Studies at Harvard University/Harris Poll showed 48% of Americans said the country is on the right path vs. 42% who said it’s on the wrong track. Ten percent were unsure. Seventy-one percent of Republicans think Trump administration has the country on the right track compared to 21% of Democrats and 31% of independents.
Overall, 52% said they approve of the job Trump is doing compared to 43% who disapprove.
Trump is outperforming former President Joe Biden in people’s perceptions on handling key issues with the majority approving of his actions related to immigration, reducing government costs and returning America to its original values.
Here’s a breakdown of the issues with Trump vs. Biden:
- Economy – 49% approval for Trump vs. 37% for Biden at the same point in the previous term
- Immigration – 56% for Trump vs. 34% for Biden
- Foreign affairs – 48% for Trump vs. 38% for Biden
- Government administration – 49% for Trump vs. 40% for Biden
- Handling inflation – 45% for Trump vs. 34% for Biden
Fifty-three percent said they approved of Trump’s work to reduce the cost of government and the same percentage said they thought the president was doing a good job “returning America to its values.” The poll did not include figures from Biden’s administration related to reducing governmental cost or promoting American values.
Regardless of the party, inflation remained the top issue among voters, with 41% saying it was the country’s most pressing problem. That was followed by immigration (14%), restoring basic American values of merit and competence (13%) and crime (9%).
The online survey was conducted Feb. 19-20 among 2,443 registered voters. It has a margin of error of plus/minus 2 percentage points.
