University of Alabama president in running to lead major Texas college

One of Alabama’s college presidents may be heading west.

Stuart Bell, who’s stepping down from his position as University of Alabama president in July, is one of five finalists to be the new chancellor of the Texas A&M System, according to The Battalion, the school’s newspaper.

The chancellor oversees eight state agencies and 11 universities educating more than 150,000 students, according to the news report.

Bell graduated from A&M in 1979.

The other candidates reportedly are:

  • Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar ‘93
  • Texas A&M Foundation President Tyson Voelkel ‘96
  • Texas state Rep. Trent Ashby ‘96
  • U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul

The selected finalist will succeed Chancellor John Sharp, the longest serving chancellor in the A&M System, who’s retiring on June 30.

Bell is leaving UA after 10 years, making him the third-longest running president in the school’s history.

The Texas A&M System Board of Regents must wait 21 days after selecting a finalist to make an official appointment.
