Innocent bystander killed in crossfire in Alabama mall food court

An innocent bystander was killed when he was caught in the crossfire of a shooting in the food court of an Alabama mall.

It is the third fatal shooting at Western Hills mall since 2018.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Monday identified the victim as Darin Marquese Hall. He was 32 and lived in Birmingham.

The shots rang out about 5 p.m. Sunday at the Fairfield mall, located on Aaron Aronov Drive.

Roughly a dozen people were in the food court, most of them in line to order food, when there was some type of confrontation between three people, according to video and witnesses.

One man, who had his hand under his shirt, was on one side of the food court and two other men were on the other as they engaged in some sort of dispute.

As one of the two men moved closer to the first man, he pulled a gun and fired.

The man who approached him dropped to the ground before getting back up and stumbling, appearing to be injured. The other of the two men appears to have returned fired before running away.

Customers sitting at three nearby tables ducked for cover, two of them taking off running and a woman dropping to the floor.

Those in line also scattered, included Hall.

A Fairfield firefighter who was also picking up food put a towel under Hall’s shirt to apply pressure to his wound, according to video that was posted to social media but later removed.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Hall was pronounced dead on the scene 5:33 p.m. Sheriff’s officials said Hall died at Princeton Baptist Medical Center.

Sheriff’s spokesman Henry Irby said a 21-year-old man was taken to UAB Hospital with a gunshot wound. The extent of his injury was not immediately released.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s OFfice is leading the investigation.

No arrests have been announced.

“My main concern is keeping the citizens of Jefferson County safe,‘’ Sheriff Mark Pettway said in a news release. ”We will use all of our resources to bring those who are responsible to justice.”

“As a result of the brazen act of violence, an innocent person has died,‘’ Pettway said.

Eddie Penny, the mayor of Fairfield, said Sunday night he was still gathering information and declined to comment further.

There have been other shootings at the Western Hills Mall in recent years.

In 2023, a 16-year-old boy was killed in hail of gunfire by three masked suspects outside the mall, police said at the time.

In 2020, a man was shot in the parking lot.

In 2018 a manager at the mall was shot and died on a sidewalk. The manager, 59-year-old Anthony Alberigi, was an innocent bystander who got caught in crossfire between two groups of young men, police said at the time.
