South Alabama park project sparks controversy: ‘Maybe it’s not as cool of an idea’

Most years, Alabama’s governor announces millions of dollars in projects for boat launches, nature parks, and new parks funded with oil and gas lease revenues.

These projects have rarely sparked controversy. But in Spanish Fort on Monday, a project that has received more than $11 million through the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act of 2006 (GOMESA), stirred up a list of concerns ranging from increased traffic and noise to the potential of endangering a bald eagle’s nest.
