Scouting report: What to know about Georgia ahead of matchup with Auburn

Auburn basketball survived a midweek showdown against Arkansas despite having one of its worst offensive performances all year.

In the Tigers last matchup against Georgia, it came down to the wire with Auburn escaping with a two-point victory.

Auburn was also without leading scorer Johni Broome in the that matchup in Athens.

Sitting at 24-2 overall and 12-1 in SEC play, Auburn has two more games before its final road stretch of the regular season.

Here’s a closer look at Georgia:

The season so far

Georgia enters this game with a 16-10 record, with their best victories this season coming in back-to-back conference victories over the then No. 6 Kentucky and No. 17 Oklahoma.

Since the Jan. 18 loss to Auburn, Geogia only won two of its last eight conference games. The Bulldogs are 12th in the conference with a 4-9 record in SEC play.

The Bulldogs also sit 44th in KenPom’s efficiency rankings.

Players to watch

Freshman Asa Newell leads Georgia in points and rebounds averaging 15.3 points and 6.8 rebounds. The freshman wing is shooting 55.5% from the floor.

The Bulldogs backcourt is led by Silas Demary Jr. averaging 11.9 points, 3.2 assists and 1.6 steals. Three of Georgia starters are averaging double digit point totals.

Key to the game

Staying aggressive on defense

Georgia is averaging 75.0 points and 36.9 rebounds per game.

Auburn coach Bruce Pearl was not happy with the offensive production from his team against Arkansas. However, the Tigers perimeter defense forced the Razorbacks to shoot 3-of-19 from 3-point range.

“We didn’t let our lack of shooting the basketball affect us on the defensive end, which I thought was really, really important,” Bruce Pearl said Wednesday. “I thought we got some clean looks and did not make shot.”

Auburn and Georgia will meet on Saturday, Feb. 22. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on ESPN.
